The importance of hydration in sportspeople

Dehydration is common in sports and can occur in just an hour of exercise or even more rapidly if the athlete is dehydrated before exercising or competing. 1

Basic signs of inadequate hydration in sportspeople: 1

  • Thirst
  • Weakness
  • Cramps
  • Decreased performance

Thirst is unfortunately a poor indicator of dehydration because it is a delayed response. An athlete can lose over 1.5 litres of body water before becoming thirsty. 1

Begin all exercise sessions well hydrated

Prevention is better than the cure. Adults should drink at least 6 glasses of fluids daily. Fluid intake should be increased on hot days and during or after prolonged exercise. 2

Consumption of beverages containing electrolytes and carbohydrates can help maintain fluid-electrolyte balance and sustain exercise performance. 3

Sodium and potassium are to help replace sweat and bodily electrolyte losses, and sodium also helps to stimulate thirst. 3

Why drink an oral electrolyte replacement?

Oral electrolyte replacement solutions (OER) replace mineral salts (electrolytes) and water loss during exercise or competing. OER can positively affect sports performance and prevent dehydration. 4
